Designs
An industrial design constitutes the ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an article. A design should be new and original and may consist of three-dimensional features, such as the shape or surface of an article, or of two-dimensional features, such as patterns, lines, or colour. An application for registration of designs can be filed with the Indian designs office for ‘new’ and ‘original’ designs which are not previously published in any county.
The meaning of the word ‘original’ in relation to a design, means originating from the author or such design and includes the cases which though old in themselves yet are new in their application.

Copyright in Design
When a design is registered, the registered proprietor of the design shall have copyright in the design for 10 years from the date of registration. If before the expiration of the said 10 years, application for extension of the period of copyright is made to the controller in the prescribed manner, the controller shall on payment of the prescribed fee extend the period of copyright for the second period of 5 years from the expiration of the original period of 10 years.
