Geographical Indications
Geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Some famous Indian GIs include Banaras Brocades & Sarees, Kashmir Pashmina, Darjeeling Tea, Alphonso Mango, Meerut Scissors etc. India has granted registration of Geographical Indications to 370 products.
Unlike other forms of intellectual property rights, GI is a community right i.e. it is the right of all artisans, producers and manufacturers who make, produce or manufacture their products in the territory of the GI.
